Teething is an important developmental milestone for your child, and our pediatric dentist and team want to make sure that your child remains as healthy and comfortable as possible throughout this process. Please call Seaside Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics Inc at 858-551-9700 to learn more about teething in La Jolla, California, and to schedule your child’s appointment with Dr. Anthony Scoma.
When your child’s teeth begin to erupt, it will make his or her gums sore, tender, and sometimes irritable. This will continue until all the teeth have pushed through the gums (about age 3). During this period, your child may be irritable, cranky, fussy, or restless. Other signs that may indicate teething include:
- Excessive drooling
- Swollen gum tissue
- Repeatedly rubbing the eyes, cheek, or ears
- Consistent urge to chew on solid items
- Loss of appetite or refusal of food and bottle
- An inability to sleep or restlessness during their usual naptime
To alleviate your child’s discomfort, you can rub their sore gums gentle with a clean finger, the back of a cold spoon, or a cold, wet cloth. Teething rings are also a great solution, but you should avoid teething biscuits as they contain sugar that can damage the primary teeth and contribute to infant tooth decay.
While your child is teething, monitor their teeth closely for signs of baby bottle decay. Examine the teeth, especially on the tongue side of the tooth, regularly for dull spot or lines. Speak with our pediatric dentist if you notice any signs of decay or other dental problems, or even if you just have questions about teething and tooth development.
