The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children visit the dentist for the first time at about 1 year of age. This initial visit helps your child begin to feel comfortable with their doctor and team, and helps them to feel relaxed and free of anxiety during future visits. To learn more and to schedule your child’s first dental visit in La Jolla, California, with Dr. Anthony Scoma, please call Seaside Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics Inc at 858-551-9700.

During your child’s first dental visit, our pediatric dentist will discuss with you your child’s oral health, and the steps you need to take to make sure that he or she remains healthy. The most important part of this visit, however, is helping your child get to know and feel comfortable with our dentist and team. When your child’s first appointment at our practice is pleasant and comfortable, it builds trust and helps your child feel at ease during future visits.

If possible, we will ask you to hold your child on your lap in the exam room. Children should also be encouraged to discuss any fear or anxiety that they feel.

Our dentist will provide you with information and instructions on how to care for your child’s oral health, including:

  • Proper brushing and flossing
  • How to use fluoride correctly
  • How to deal with oral habits (such as thumb sucking)
  • Teething and other developmental milestones
  • How to prevent accidents that may damage the face and teeth
  • Oral health and diet
  • How to care for soft tissues (cheeks, gums, etc.)
  • Your child’s risk of cavities

We will schedule regular follow up visits every 6 months so that our dentist can continue monitoring your child’s oral health, growth, and development, and check for dental problems. During each appointment, our dentist will gently examine your child’s teeth and gums to check for decay and other problems, and provide a dental cleaning.

We welcome you to call us today to learn more about your child’s first dental exam and make his or her appointment with our pediatric dentist.
